The Alaska DOT&PF is charged with planning, developing and maintaining safe and reliable transportation facilities throughout the State of Alaska. Due to the size, geography and remote nature of much of the State, the Department's range of responsibilities is far broader than most other state transportation agencies. The Central Region encompasses a geographic area of over 181,000 square miles, larger than the state of California. The area stretches from Prince William Sound, the Kenai Peninsula, Kodiak Island, the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, the Kuskokwim Delta, Bristol Bay and the Alaska Peninsula to the remote extremes of the Aleutian Island Chain and Pribilof Islands. The region encompasses 68% of the states population and 54% of the state's vehicle miles of travel. The area has over 6,000 road lane miles, 315 bridges and 106 state-owned and operated airports. Planning responsibilities are geographically split into 5 areas that are managed by 7 planners.The Anchorage area is managed by a Transportation Planner, DOT&PFs primary staff for the Anchorage area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and this Planner position.Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska with a population of 290,000 persons, 600 moose, 250 black bears, 60 grizzly bears and 30 wolves. Life in Anchorage is a full on adventure! With more than 60 glaciers in a 50-mile radius, a salmon stream in the heart of downtown, 6 surrounding mountain ranges, 300 mis of wilderness trails and the third largest state park in its backyard.Anchorage has a multimodal transportation system and is a hub for road, rail and air cargo connections. Anchorage International Airport is a major air cargo hub ranking as the fifth busiest airport in the world for air cargo traffic. The (maritime) Port of Anchorage handles over 90% of the freight entering Alaska and the nearby headquarters of the Alaska Railroad Corporation offers passenger and freight service south to Seward, Alaska (at tidewaters edge of the Gulf of Alaska), and north to the City of Fairbanks (centrally located in the interior of Alaska). Much of the work in this position will focus on road, highway, pedestrian, bicyclist and transit improvements to the surface transportation network, smaller community airports, and intermodal connections.The duties of this position are varied and require regular interaction with local representatives of the Municipality of Anchorage, as well as within the DOT&PF. The position will interact with other functional groups (i.e., Preliminary Design and Environmental, Design, Right-of-Way, Utilities, Construction, Project Control, Procurement, as well as occasional interaction with Statewide Program Development.
